CPU (Processor)

Relax. We'll talk through this in plain words — no textbook voice.

CPU is the PC's computing brain. It plays a central role in opening software, running game logic, compiling code, and exporting video.

What to Know When Choosing a CPU

  • Cores / Threads: The more cores, the more tasks it can handle at once. Around 6 cores works well for gaming, but for heavy editing, streaming, or programming, 8 cores or more is better.
  • Clock Speed: The higher the GHz, the faster it can process a single task. Single-thread performance matters a lot for FPS in some games.
  • Generation: Newer CPU generations tend to bring better efficiency, features, and motherboard support. Check the generation, not just a similar-looking model name.
  • Socket: The CPU socket and motherboard socket must match. You can't put an Intel LGA1700 CPU into an AMD AM5 motherboard. Force it, and not only will the PC fail to boot, you could damage the pins.
  • Integrated Graphics: If you want a display output before buying a GPU, you'll need a CPU with integrated graphics. If you're using a dedicated GPU, it's not strictly necessary.

Note: When placing the CPU into the socket, line it up with the triangle marker. If it doesn't fit, don't force it. Damage the socket or pins and you could lose the entire value of the motherboard or CPU.

When choosing a CPU, don't just look at "the fastest one." Consider it together with the motherboard socket, cooling, RAM support, GPU balance, and the software you'll actually run.
