Types of Malware

Relax. We'll talk through this in plain words — no textbook voice.

What you'll walk away with

  • Understand the types of malware, without any of the intimidation
  • Apply this concept right away in real-world scenarios
  • Learn to avoid security risks for both yourself and others

Let's think about this for a second

A virus attaches itself to a file and spreads, only activating once a user runs it. A worm can spread across a network entirely on its own, without any user action (which makes it more dangerous). A trojan disguises itself as legitimate software to get installed (for example, cracked software). Ransomware encrypts your files and demands payment — it targets Availability. Spyware secretly monitors user activity (keystrokes, screen) without their knowledge.

Let's connect this to a real scenario

Downloading cracked or pirated software is a common vector for trojans — malware can hide inside 'free' software. Don't open email attachments (.exe, macro-enabled .docx) if you don't recognize the sender. If you're hit by ransomware and have no backup, recovering your files becomes very difficult — and even if you pay the ransom, there's no guarantee you'll get your files back (you can't trust the attacker).

Let's walk through it together

Malware types
-------------
Virus → file ကပ်ပြီး ပျံ့ပွား, user run မှ activate
Worm → network ကနေ ကိုယ်တိုင် ပျံ့ပွား
Trojan → legitimate software ဟန်ဆောင်
Ransomware → file encrypt, ငွေတောင်း
Spyware → activity ကို secretly monitor

You'll be able to distinguish five malware types by how they spread and the damage they cause.

Try it in 5 minutes

Look up a ransomware attack news story and write down how it spread and how the victim responded.

A quick word of caution

If you're hit by ransomware, try restoring from a backup first instead of paying the ransom — even if you pay, there's no guarantee you'll get your files back.

Easy traps

  • Assuming 'I have antivirus installed, so I'm completely safe' — antivirus is just one layer; safe habits still matter
  • Ignoring the risk of cracked software

Now try it yourself

Look up a ransomware attack news story and write down how it spread and how the victim responded.

You'll know it worked when: You'll be able to distinguish five malware types by how they spread and the damage they cause.
