Drop the Noise

Relax. We'll talk through this in plain words — no textbook voice.

What you'll walk away with

  • Understand how to drop the noise without any of the intimidation
  • Get hands-on practice trying it yourself
  • Learn to sidestep guesswork and secrets, with a smile

Relax. We're not going to explain this chapter like a textbook — just like a friend talking you through it, in plain, easy-to-follow terms.

Let's think about it this way for a second

Noise is things like greetings, a summary repeated over and over, a wall of emoji, tool logs, twenty lines of "sounds good," unrelated examples. It might all be accurate. But none of it helps with this question. The test for cutting something: would the answer actually get worse without it? If not, cut it. Out of 12 spoons on the table, you only need 2 to eat the soup. The rest is just noise.

Let's connect it to everyday life

Write a fake context, then trim it. Keep — one rule, a note excerpt, the question. Cut — a long "You are a helpful assistant" preamble, an old compliment, an unrelated sports headline, a duplicate note. After trimming, read what's left carefully. Does the task still work? If it does, the cut was a success.

Let's try it out together

text
Drop:
- long persona speech
- “great question!” x 10
- unrelated football note
Keep:
- one rule
- one matching paragraph
- the question
You should see
Strip noisy lines out of the context.

5-Minute Try

Write 15 noisy lines of context. Keep only 5, and explain why you cut the rest.

One Quick Heads-Up

Noise can be perfectly polite. Polite doesn't mean useful.

Easy traps

  • Mistaking a long, polite paragraph for context
  • Including two near-identical notes "just to be safe"

Now Try It Yourself

Write 15 noisy lines of context. Keep only 5, and explain why you cut the rest.

You'll know it worked when: Strip noisy lines out of the context.
